Customer A was referred to the progress 2 work programme via Advisor B, from another provision.

As ‘A’ required CSCS training, ‘B’ decided to send ‘A’ to the p2w programme for training and made appointment arrangements for him to meet with p2w Advisor, ‘C’, for his one-to-one Initial Assessment.

During an in-depth investigation, ‘A’ mentioned to ‘C’ that he had been clean and stable for eight months, admitting that he had been a multiple user of heroin, cocaine and crack for a number of years prior. He also divulged that he had a past offending background for theft and the supply of Class ‘A’ drugs. He had served a custodial sentence and was currently on a supervision order.

‘C’ completed an initial assessment with him and an Individual Action Plan. ‘A’ requested that he would like to access CSCS training and wished to consider Fork Lift Truck training.

‘A’s attendance was excellent at each set of training. He was put forward for his CSCS test and successfully passed it.

Customer ‘A’ had earlier revealed to ‘C’ that he had no previous employment history to speak about. He said he had worked in a series of construction labouring jobs, a few days at a time. These had proved fruitless, but they had given him sufficient interest in construction to endeavour to work towards this area of employment as a ‘proper job for once’.

Throughout his time with us, ‘A’ was encouraged to job search with his p2w Advisor. ’C’ sourced for him an employment opportunity as a ground work labourer with a Construction Company.

As a consequence of the comprehensive application to this Company, ‘A’ was then offered a job with the Construction.

Client 1 was referred by Skills and Work to complete his CSCS qualification. At first he was quite shy and reserved and didn’t feel confident around other people. Appointments were set up at times where there weren’t many other clients around and then slowly initiated him in where others attended at the same time.

Client 1 completed his CSCS practice sessions and felt confident to pass his CSCS test. He successfully passed his CSCS after only a month of being signed up to P2W.

To move the client forward, we discussed what direction he could take to gain him employment in the near future.

Together we advised a plan to get client 1 onto a Security course, where he would gain vital skills in Door supervision, Security operations, CCTV and Vehicle immobilisation. The customer was referred to Salford college and they got back to him the next day confirming his placement with the security company Vindex.

After completing the course and with the help of P2W, job applications were sent out and the client became employed by a company who specialises in providing security for VIP’s, celebrities, people and property. Client’s 1 role is to deliver packages, take cash to banks, control crowd control, ensure that event tickets are not forged and assist travellers in airports.

Client 1 has come along way from when he first signed up to P2W and has achieved a start towards a successful career in the process.

Paul is 38, he was referred to the Progress2Work program by the national probation service. He had a history of heroin use and was currently on a treatment of methadone each day and he had been stable on this for 12 months. He had a criminal history including burglary and armed robbery for which he had served several prison sentences.

Paul had never worked. While in prison he had undertaken several training courses and worked on projects in the prison. We used these courses and the skills gained to create a skills based CV which allowed him to start applying for jobs. Paul was very low in confidence when he came to Progress2Work and did not believe anyone would employ him. Seeing the skills and experience he had set out in a CV gave him a real boost in confidence and we helped him develop this so he could see he had a great deal to offer an employer. Paul was very apprehensive about the interview process so we worked on interview and confidence building techniques. Paul sent his CV to several employers and we assisted him in completing application forms.

Paul has now started work through an agency as a warehouse operative, and has been there almost 3 months. He says he is enjoying his first job and the sense of achievement it has given him.

David was seen initially in Probation offices at the end of July 2009. He has mobility issues, due to being assaulted during a robbery at a Boots depot he was guarding in his capacity of a security guard. I then saw him at home with his Probation Officer, as he couldn’t always get to the probation office due to his disabilities. David has a long offending history but a strong work ethic. As he thought he may have difficulty finding employment due to his offending, he was considering the self-employment route. I referred David onto a self-employment seminar, which he attended. David was then referred to Business Link where he got help with a business plan and also to source funding for the venture. They arranged a meeting at a local bank, but unfortunately he was turned away due to adverse credit. David then managed to secure the money from family members. Following the presentation and subsequent advice and support from Business Link, Ann has set up his own business in catering.
